Cost Guide
Cost of water tank stand fabrication in Nigeria 2026 - steel, welding and finishing
Most of a tank stand’s price is steel and welding. See how fabrication is priced in Nigeria, how labour-only and complete quotes differ, and how to check what you are buying

Nigeria-wide figures use the local General / Nigeria record, or typical values from available state records. Final quotations depend on scope, specification and site condition.
Open full calculatorMost of what you pay for a tank stand is steel and the labour to cut, weld and finish it. That is why two quotations can look so different: one may include the steel and the other only the labour. This guide looks at the workshop side of the job. It explains how fabrication is priced in Nigeria, how labour only and labour-plus-materials quotations compare, and how to check that the steel you pay for is the steel you get. Our water tank stand cost guide covers fabrication, foundations and installation together.
1. What Low, Average and High usually mean
The Low, Average and High prices at the top of this page are planning figures. Check the unit shown beside each price, since fabrication may be priced per stand, per kilogram of steel or as labour only. This is what usually sits behind each level:
Low - a short stand made from lighter steel sections for a small tank, fabricated in the workshop.
Average - a standard stand with adequate sections, bracing, welded joints and a primer and paint finish.
High: tall - heavy-duty or multi-tank stands, thicker sections, galvanising, welding to an engineer’s design, or on-site fabrication in difficult locations.

2. What really affects tank stand fabrication cost?
- Steel sections and thickness - square tube, angle iron and plate, and how thick they are.
- Weight of steel - heavier stands use more material and take longer to weld.
- Stand height and load - taller stands holding bigger tanks need stronger sections.
- Bracing - diagonal and cross members - add steel and labour.
- Welding quality - full, clean welds take more time than quick tack welds.
- Coating - primer and paint, or galvanising, which protects against rust.
- Labour only or labour plus materials - who buys the steel.
- Workshop or on-site fabrication - working on site can cost more.
- Delivery - moving a finished stand to your site.
- Steel price changes - steel prices can move quickly, and so do quotations.
- Location and fabricator - rates differ across states and workshops.
3. What should the quotation include?
Ask each fabricator to list each of these in writing:- Dimensions - height, width and the platform size for your tank.
- Load basis - the tank capacity and weight the stand is designed for.
- Steel schedule - each section, its size, thickness and quantity.
- Welding - the method and whether joints are fully welded.
- Bracing - how the stand is stiffened.
- Coating - primer type, paint coats or galvanising.
- Base plates and anchor bolts.
- Basis of price - labour only, or labour plus materials.
- Delivery and timeline.
4. Practical examples with a cost breakdown
Add up the lines in each example, then compare the total with the figures at the top of this page.Example 1: a small stand for a 1,000-litre tank, labour plus materials
- Steel sections - ₦150,000
- Welding consumables - ₦50,000
- Fabrication labour - ₦120,000
- Primer and paint - ₦25,000
- Base plates and anchor bolts - ₦35,000
- Delivery - ₦100,000 - 250,000
- Estimated total - ₦480,000
Here you buy the steel yourself and the fabricator charges for labour.
- Fabrication labour - ₦200,000
- Welding consumables, if charged - ₦0
- Your cost for steel sections, bought separately - ₦600,000
- Your cost for primer and paint, bought separately - ₦25,000
- Delivery - ₦120,000 - 250,000
- Estimated total - ₦920,000
- Heavier steel sections and bracing - ₦800,000
- Platform and tank bases - ₦150,000
- Fabrication labour - ₦600,000
- Galvanising or full paint system - ₦50,000
- Base plates and anchor bolts - ₦80,000
- Delivery and handling - ₦250,000
- Contingency for steel price changes - ₦150,000
- Estimated total - ₦2,080,000
5. What goes into a fabricated stand
- Legs - square tube or angle iron.
- Cross and diagonal bracing - to stop the stand swaying.
- Platform frame - that carries the full tank base.
- Base plates and anchor bolts - that fix the stand to the foundation.
- Welding rods or wire - and other consumables.
- Primer and paint, or a galvanised finish.
6. Labour only or labour plus materials? Painted or galvanised?
- Labour only - you buy and deliver the steel. This can save money if you know steel, but you carry the risk of buying the wrong section or too little.
- Labour plus materials - the fabricator supplies everything. It is simpler, but insist on a steel schedule so you know what you are paying for.
- Painted - primer and paint are cheaper to apply and fine for many stands, but need touch-ups over time.
- Galvanised - a zinc coating that resists rust for much longer, but costs more upfront. Ask each fabricator to quote the same specification on both bases, so you can compare fairly. You can weigh up to three options side by side on the Compare Before You Build page.
7. Common mistakes people make
- Comparing a labour-only quotation with a labour-plus-materials one.
- Accepting thin steel sections to save money.
- Skipping bracing.
- Weak or incomplete welds.
- No primer before paint, or painting over rust.
- Leaving out base plates and anchor bolts.
- Not agreeing the dimensions against the tank before work starts.
- Not asking for a steel schedule.
- Paying in full before the stand is checked.
8. How to hire a tank stand fabricator safely
Ask each fabricator for photos of earlier stands, and visit the workshop if you can. Insist on a steel schedule in writing and check the sections when they are delivered. Agree the dimensions against your tank, and pay in stages tied to progress.Read Skillland’s Trust & Safety guidance and compare profiles on Top Rated Skillmen before you decide.
9. Questions to settle before work starts
- What tank capacity and weight is the stand designed for?
- What steel sections and thicknesses will be used?
- Is the price labour only or labour plus materials?
- How will joints be welded and braced?
- Will the stand be painted or galvanised?
- Are base plates and anchor bolts included?
- What warranty do you give?
10. Find tank stand fabricators in your location
Choose your state or city on the locations page to see where tank stand fabricators are available, or post your project and let suitable professionals respond.11. Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to fabricate a water tank stand in Nigeria? It depends on the height, the steel and whether the price is labour only. Check the Low, Average and High figures at the top of this page and ask for a steel schedule.
Should I buy the steel myself?
It can save money, but only if you know exactly what is needed. Wrong sections or poor quality can cost more later.
What thickness of steel should a tank stand use?
It depends on the tank load, the height and the design. Ask the fabricator to explain and, for tall stands, ask for an engineer’s check.
Is galvanising worth it?
It costs more upfront but protects against rust for much longer. Compare the cost with repainting over time.
How long does fabrication take?
A small stand can take a few days. Larger or galvanised stands take longer.
Does the fabrication price include installation?
Not always. Ask whether delivery, foundations and installation are included, or priced separately.
