Know what has to be removed

Site clearing can range from cutting light vegetation to removing trees, old slabs, abandoned structures, rubble or large quantities of unwanted soil. A contractor should inspect the land before deciding what labour, machinery and haulage will be needed.

Access determines the equipment

A spacious plot with a good approach road may accommodate an excavator, bulldozer or tipper easily. A tight plot inside a developed Lagos neighbourhood may require smaller equipment, more manual work or staged removal of debris. Gates, overhead cables, nearby buildings and estate access rules should be checked before machinery is sent to site.

Plan where the waste will go

Clearing is not complete when debris is pushed into one corner of the property. Agree whether the quotation includes loading, transportation and lawful disposal. If useful material such as laterite or reusable blocks will remain on site, identify a storage area that will not obstruct excavation or deliveries.

Protect what should remain
